About the Course

The Emergency First Response (EFR) Primary & Secondary Care course teaches you what to do in the critical moments between when a life-threatening emergency occurs and when emergency medical services arrive.

During the course you’ll learn how to perform CPR and use an AED, provide first aid that eases pain, assess a variety of injuries and illnesses and practice bandaging and splinting.

Course Outline

The course is broken up into 3 stages, undertaken one after the other. Click through below to get more details on each of the stages.

Knowledge Development

Firstly you’ll be provided access to the EFR eLearning materials. Independently and at your own pace, you’ll learn how to recognise life-threatening problems, use the cycle of care to prioritise care, how to protect yourself against pathogens, and how to distinguish illnesses from injuries. The EFR Primary & Secondary Care course theory is all digital, meaning you can do it from the comfort of your sofa on a computer or smart device.

Typical time commitment: 2-4 hours

Skill Development

During the skill development workshop your instructor will take you through the eight primary care skills and four secondary care skills. You’ll get to practice CPR, AED use, how to manage bleeding, shock and spinal injury, and how to assess and attend to injuries and illnesses.

At the end of the skill development workshop, there are two exams to complete; one for primary care and another for secondary care. This is completed online through the eLearning course.

Typical time commitment: 4-6 hours

Scenario Practice

Your instructor will ask you to complete a number of primary and secondary care scenarios. You’ll need to put together all you’ve learnt on the course to assess the situation and respond accordingly. During the scenarios, you may work with other course participants, taking it in turns to be the lead responder.

Typical time commitment: 2 hours
