PADI Drift Diver

PADI Drift Diver

About the Course

Diving in a current can feel like flying under water. Go with the flow and take the PADI Drift Diver course.

During the course you’ll learn from one of our experienced drift diving instructors and practice buoyancy control, navigation, use of surface signalling equipment and buddy communication.

Course Outline

The course is broken up into 2 stages, undertaken one after the other. Click through below to get more details on each of the stages.

Knowledge Development

Firstly you’ll be provided access to the PADI eLearning materials. You’ll learn about types of drift diving, surface supervision, equipment and boats, dive planning, entry techniques, how to tour the dive site, ascents and exits, and drift diving hazards and problems. The PADI Drift Diver course theory is all digital, meaning you can do it from the comfort of your sofa on a computer or smart device.

Typical time commitment: 2-4 hours

Open Water Dives

The PADI Drift Diver course consists of two open water dives.

Before heading out, your instructor will go through proper drift dive planning, during which you’ll make a plan for the open water dives.

During the open water dives, you’ll practice entry and exit techniques, touring of the dive site whilst controlling your buoyancy, speed and direction of travel, maintaining buddy contact, and how to make a safety stop in a current.

Drift diving in Melbourne usually requires a period of time when the tides are transitioning between high and low. Because of this, we only get to dive one drift dive per day. As such, the open water dives are carried out over 2 days.

Typical time commitment: 2 x ½ days
